CULTURAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES PROTECTION
The firm represents Indian tribes and tribal organizations in support of their efforts to protect their culture from harm by outsiders. Geographic sites of religious and cultural significance, headwaters for on-Reservation rivers and streams, a lake of cultural and spiritual importance, a River and its fishery, and other culturally significant sites have been the subject of the firm's efforts to preserve and protect tribal resources.
The firm has been successful in many cases in preventing harm to Indian culture from non-Indian energy development projects, such as coal mines, hydroelectric projects, reservoir projects and other threats to the survival of Indian culture. This area of the firm’s practice also includes representation of Indian tribes in cultural repatriation cases. Wide-ranging campaigns have been devised to include strategic use of negotiation, litigation, political persuasion, public education, and related efforts to advance the tribes' interests. The firm also helps Indian tribes protect their culture by assisting with the negotiation and purchase of sacred lands and sites of cultural significance.
